Kang Kyoung-Sun
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of Therapeutic Instrumental Music Performance (TIMP) using a Musical Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI) keyboard on hand function in elderly patients with hemiplegia stroke. The subjects of this study included four elderly patients hospitalized at rehabilitation center in Seoul. A total of twenty-one 30-minute music therapy sessions were held three times per week. The MIDI program was used to detect deformity of hand function and the Purdue Pegboard Test, Box and Block Test, and Manual Function Test were conducted to measure the differences between pre and posttests. The results of the study showed that all four subjects improved in finger and hand movements, hand control ability and dexterity. There was no improvement in upper extremity function, indicating that the improvement of hand function did extend to the range of motion for arms and shoulders.
